Dreaming about crying

A reading for meaning, not prophecy

Crying in a dream is read as release, and often its opposite — in the East a paradox where quiet tears can foretell relief or joy (泪), in the West emotion finally discharging, in Ibn Sirin's tradition relief after sorrow if the weeping is calm.

Three readings

In Chinese tradition · 周公解梦 · 泪

周公解梦 often reads tears paradoxically — quiet weeping can mark sorrow turning, relief arriving, or even joy to come; loud wailing, by contrast, can warn of real grief. The dream-cry is emotion finding its necessary outlet.

In Western psychology · Jungian

Jung would read crying as the discharge of feeling the waking self has held back — grief, relief, or tenderness finally given room. To weep in a dream is often healing; the psyche completing in sleep what the day would not allow.

In Islam · Ibn Sirin

Ibn Sirin distinguished by manner: weeping quietly, without wailing or song, was read as relief, joy, or comfort coming after hardship; loud lamentation, as affliction. Framed as meaning: what feeling needs release, and will you let it move through quietly?
